Chapter Ten

It had been a while since I’d talked to Alton.

And that was usually intentional. While we may have been on good terms, I knew it was difficult to talk to an ex you still had feelings for and Alton had told me as much about a year ago, before Sicily stopped contacting him. He was also surprisingly accepting of the fact that I couldn’t reciprocate those feelings. That hope had fizzled out a long time ago for me, and even though Alton was notably disappointed, he never tried to make me feel bad about it. As far as I knew, he’d just accepted it and moved on.

As to why my feelings couldn’t rekindle themselves? I wasn’t entirely sure. Alton was a handsome enough man, and he was smart and kind. Yet, whenever I thought about getting back together with him, all I could remember was the hell his parents had put him through regarding dating me and then having a child with me. And that was enough. I was just glad and grateful that Alton wanted to be an active member of Sicily’s life. Most men in my experience didn’t seem to care about their ‘oops’ baby, especially not rich ones.

Still, hearing Alton’s voice now was jarring, especially considering the day I’d had. I was struck with stunned silence until I heard him clear his throat, a slight pause tailing behind his voice.

“Twila? You still there?” His voice, contrary to Dean’s or Bud’s or anyone else’s in the Ozarks, was crisp, cheerful, and without an accent. And Alton always sounded younger than he really was.

“Yeah, yeah, sorry. I’m still here.” I squeezed my eyes shut and forced the lump of stress out of my throat so I could talk.

“You get my check I sent?” he asked. Alton was good about paying child support and he paid right on time, every month, so he was more than aware that I’d received his check.

“I did. Thank you.”

“Hey… it’s… it’s good to hear you.”

“It’s good to hear your voice too.” I laughed, though I wasn’t sure why. “I, uh, I didn’t mean to space out just now. I’m just not feeling great right now.”

“Oh… I’m sorry to hear that.” He sounded just as uncomfortable as I was sure I did. But, not wanting to focus on things I couldn’t help, I instead focused on the fact that I could hear birds in the background and wondered if he was by the coast, trekking off on some vacation again.

“Is there anything I can help out with, maybe?” he continued and there was a hopeful tone to his voice. “I have a really good doctor referral I could give you.”

“Oh, no, thank you,” I said tiredly even as the thought of a human doctor sent a shiver down my spine. “It’s just a cold, I think. I’ll be okay.”

“Alright, if you’re sure.”

“I am.”

Pause. “What’s, uh, what’s been going on lately?”

“Oh, you know.” I nearly laughed again as I crossed my legs and still had no idea what in the world I found so funny.
